Voices of the Past
Kaye England’s “Voices of the Past” books contain a combination of elements that are simply irresistible to quilters! First, the books have wonderful dollops of history, quotations, historical photos, and inspiration. But they’re not just history! Tucked away in the pages are patterns, templates and loads of practical instructions. For this writer, the books were not only delightful to read, but were also wonderful “how-to” books with some great project ideas.
Need some examples? The first volume has some interesting contrasts. Kaye writes about Amelia Earhardt, a pioneer in aviation; then adds Christa McAucliffe, the young teacher who perished in the Challenger disaster. Both women have their own quilt or quilt block dedicated to them. In Volume I, you’ll also find Martha Washington, Dolley Madison, Helen Taft, Frances Cleveland, Priscilla Aulden, Betsy Ross, and more. Volume Two explores 12 more women, with some original blocks designed in their honor. Each book also has a great bibliography, should you wish to read more about the women and their times.
