Stamp Basket Quilt: Quilt Construction
Basket Blocks: Construct a total of 24 basket blocks (Figure 1) in the following manner:
- Trace 24 basket handles (Template D) onto smooth side of fusible web. Cut slightly away from traced line. Fuse basket handle to wrong side of a medium or dark print. Cut on traced line and peel away fusible web. Following placement lines, iron basket handle to large background triangle. Machine blanket stitch handle with either monofilament or matching thread.
- With right sides together, sew one medium or dark print (Template A) to one triangle sewn previously (basket handle).
- Basket base: Sew one 2 1/2" square of background fabric (Template B) to a small triangle (Template C) of medium or dark print. Repeat this step to make another unit for the opposite side of the basket block.
- Sew basket base units to each side of pieced square from Step 2.
- Sew large background triangle to base of basket unit.
Quilt Top:
- Arrange the basket blocks in units of 4, following diagram (Figure 2). Sew units together.
Borders:
- Cut two strips - 2 1/2" X 36 1/2" and sew to top and bottom of quilt center.
- Cut two strips - 2 1/2" X 28 1/2" and sew to sides of quilt center.
- Cut a total of thirty-four 2 7/8" light background squares. Cut in half on the diagonal. Cut an equal amount of assorted medium/dark prints in the same manner. Make a total of 68 half-square triangle blocks by sewing together a light background triangle and a medium/dark print along the long side of the triangle to create the sawtooth border. The outer border consists of 14 half-square triangles for the top, 14 half-square triangles for the bottom, and 20 half-square triangles with a 2 1/2" square on each end for each side. See cover photo for details on placement.
